When refinancing the car is a real conversation

A refinance is not a reward for wanting a lower payment. It is a new loan, and the file has to be able to carry it.

What a refinance is

You replace the loan you have with a new one. If the new rate is lower, and the term is not stretched so far that you pay more interest anyway, the payment can drop. If the car is worth less than the balance, a lender may say no even when the score has moved.

The store that sold you the car is often the first place that can see the file move. A climb that is real, not a wish, is the moment to talk. Forty points, or a score that has crossed into the mid-600s, is a reason to call. It is not a guarantee of an approval.

What has to be true first

The current loan has to be reporting, and reporting on time. A refinance application on top of a fresh late payment is a worse file than the one you started with.

Card balances matter here too. A lender looking at a refinance sees the whole file, not just the car. A card sitting at its limit can price the new loan as if nothing changed.

The questions worth asking

What is the new rate, the new term, and the total interest, not just the new payment. A longer term can make the monthly number look kind while the car costs more.

What is the payout on the old loan, and is there negative equity. If there is, ask whether it is being rolled in. Rolling a shortfall into a new loan is a decision, not a detail.

What we will not tell you

We will not name a month when you will qualify. On-time history and lower balances are what a lender can see. A date on a website is a guess.

We also will not tell you to miss the current payment so you can “save for the refinance.” The payment you skip is the one that shows up.

General notes for Canadian files. Not a rate quote, and not a reading of your Equifax or TransUnion report.

Why a 540 or 560 score often means a mid-teens car rate

The approval is not a failure. It is a price. Here is what that price is usually paying for, and what it is not.

Paying a collection does not delete it

In Canada, money can change the status of a collection. It does not erase an accurate item. Spend it only when the writing is clear.
